  14. LAS VEGAS, Nevada-- October 19, 1993 -- Apple Computer, Inc. today
  15. announced it would offer PowerPC microprocessor upgrades for its
  16. current line of Apple Workgroup Servers.  With this announcement,
  17. Apple extends its commitment to provide PowerPC processor upgrades to
  18. all three models of the Apple Workgroup Server.  Apple currently
  19. plans to incorporate the powerful RISC-based microprocessor, designed
  20. in conjunction with IBM and Motorola, into its line of Macintosh
  21. personal computers and servers beginning in the first half of 1994.
  22.     Announcing the upgrade plan at Apple's Worldwide Sales Conference in
  23. Las Vegas, Nevada, Morris Taradalsky, Apple Business Systems (ABS)
  24. vice president and general manager, said owners of Apple Workgroup
  25. Server 60, 80 and 95 will have the option to upgrade to PowerPC
  26. processor based systems running a version of the Macintosh System 7.0
  27. operating system for the PowerPC processor.  The current Workgroup
  28. Server 60, 80 and 95, based on the Motorola 68040 microprocessor, are
  29. planned to continue to be offered along with PowerPC platforms.
  30.     Taradalsky also said enhancements were planned for the popular Apple
  31. Workgroup Server 95, running A/UX, Apple's version of UNIX with a
  32. Macintosh user interface, to further boost performance and expansion.
  33. Apple also plans to provide an upgrade path from the Workgroup Server
  34. 95 to even higher performance, UNIX-based servers utilizing a PowerPC
  35. processor.
  36.     By providing an upgrade path both for Macintosh System 7.0 Workgroup
  37. Server 60 and 80 as well as the A/UX-based Workgroup Server 95, Apple
  38. believes that customers will have a range of robust, scalable and
  39. flexible client/server solutions, further enhancing the return on
  40. their Apple Workgroup Server investment.
  41.     "Apple intends to ensure that its Workgroup Server customers have a
  42. smooth transition to PowerPC technology by providing a clear hardware
  43. and operating system upgrade path," said Taradalsky.  "ABS intends to
  44. provide PowerPC platforms that protect and extend systems customers'
  45. investments.  By keeping the 68040 processor systems in the line, we
  46. plan to have a wider range of hardware and operating system options
  47. for customers from which to choose."

  49. Upgrade Strategy

  51. Specifics on the various upgrade options should be made available
  52. when PowerPC microprocessor Workgroup Server products are announced.
  53.     "Our aim in providing these PowerPC processor upgrades is to protect
  54. customers' investments in client/server applications." said Jim
  55. Groff, senior director for LAN systems with Apple's ABS Division.
  56. "We intend to retain a high degree of compatibility with existing
  57. Workgroup Server applications.  Apple is also working closely with
  58. key developers to ensure their applications will take advantage of
  59. PowerPC performance."
  60.     ABS plans to produce versions of the AppleShare file and print server
  61. software, AppleTalk Remote Access and its recently announced
  62. AppleSearch product that will run on its PowerPC processor-based
  63. servers, Groff said.

  67. PowerPC offers performance improvements over current CISC-based
  68. microprocessors and competitive offerings. This new level of
  69. performance translates into improved speed, enhanced scalability and
  70. reliability for mission critical applications.  In May, at the Apple
  71. Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple demonstrated for the first
  72. time a prototype PowerPC processor based system.
  73.     Over time, Apple plans to offer a full range of products based on
  74. PowerPC, from entry-level to high-end Macintosh personal computers
  75. and servers. The new computers will offer developers and customers
  76. high performance and a variety of new features at competitive prices.
